Day One Panels:

Integrating sustainability across the curriculum – definitions, drivers, development, and metrics

  • Sustainability is emerging on some campuses as a new multidisciplinary field, much like Women’s and Gender Studies, African-American Studies, and Urban Planning have over the past 40 years.
  • Some campuses are rejecting the development of yet another multidisciplinary field, choosing instead to support faculty in infusing sustainability themes into courses across the curriculum.
  • How are faculty members in both models developing sustainability-related and -focused courses across multiple disciplines? How are institutions defining and evaluating these courses? How does this affect signatories to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, as they strive to meet the educational goals of that commitment? We will explore case study examples from institutions that have developed strategies to address these questions.

Co-curricular opportunities for experiential learning

  • Institutions are capitalizing on opportunities to get students involved in hands-on, problem-based learning. The living-laboratory approach to teaching sustainability is finding success across the country. How can faculty and sustainability staff collaborate to provide opportunities for students to learn and to apply that learning in practical environments?

Beyond Green:  New Sustainable Jobs and Educational & Training Strategies

  • Community colleges are training students to lead the green jobs revolution. How are four-year institutions preparing graduates to participate, manage, and lead? How can two and four-year institutions work together to prepare students in this transformational economy?

Day Two Workshop:

Challenges and opportunities: strategies for integrating sustainability across the curriculum

  • Facilitators will guide provosts, deans, faculty, and sustainability directors through a discussion about the roles each can play in triggering institutionally-relevant and appropriate support for sustainability in the curriculum and throughout research.
