The modern world had the food system at its heart. Everything that we take for granted today, from wage work to the nation-state has its origins in the new ways of provisioning that emerged in the 15th century. By looking at the origins of themodern food system, and some 21st century ways to re-imagine it, it becomes easier to see the social fabric of everyday life that, too often, remains hidden. Raj’s talk draws on world history, agronomy and will feature footage from the latest film by award-winning director Steve James in a project called “Generation Food.”
