The Mountains-to-Sea Trail stretches 1,000 miles across the state of North Carolina from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks. The trail is approximately half-way complete with a little over 500 miles of footpath complete. Temporary connectors on back roads and state bike routes, people can now hike across the state. A product of the 1973 North Carolina Trails System Act, the trail will one day reach across the state from the Tennessee border in the West to the Atlantic Ocean.

October is Mountains-to-Sea Trail Month which means that they are dozens of events throughout the state along portions of the trial that are built or are in need of work throughout the month. For a full calendar of events, see the Friends of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail web site for a full calendar of events. Local outdoor store, Great Outdoor Provision Company, is holding a raffle to benefit the trail. Tickets are 1 for $5 or 5 for $20 and are on sale from October 1-31 at Great Outdoor Provision Company shops (check out the Winston-Salem store in Thru-way Shopping Center off Stratford Rd.). All proceeds will be used to extend and maintain the trail across North Carolina. See the Provision Company’s web site for more information.
