Fall 2011/Spring 2012 Internships
Communications and Outreach
The intern will work with the director and the Sustainability Fellow to develop content for the campus sustainability website including, but not limited to, news stories, calendar contributions, and social media outlets. The intern will contribute to the production of a monthly electronic newsletter, based on the news stories written for the website.
Game Day Recycling and RecycleMania
- Game Day Recycling: During the fall semester, the intern will recruit for and manage a volunteer game day recycling program for the home football season. Volunteers recruited for the effort will interface with fans, work with the athletic department to manage demand for recycling collection, prepare communication materials about the program, and promote the program to tailgating fans. This intern must be available to work on the program during the summer months, but does not have to be physically located on campus until the fall.
- RecycleMania: During the spring semester, the intern will work with the director and the campus recycling manager to promote all aspects of the national RecycleMania competition.
Earth Day Planning
The intern will work with the director, community stakeholders, and student groups to develop plans for campus participation in an Earth Day 2012 celebration and related campus events. Note: this is a spring semester internship.
Student Programming
The intern will serve as a liaison between the Office of Sustainability, Residence Life and Housing, Student Government, and the Greek system. Among the intern’s responsibilities will be the development of outreach materials for students on “conscious consumerism,” an Eco-Reps student representative program, and the distribution of a campus Green Guide, with the lead intern on the project.
Energy and Carbon Action Planning
The intern will work with the campus utilities manager, the campus energy manager, the parking and transportation office, and the purchasing department to create an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions generated as a result of campus operations. The intern may begin work on a carbon action plan for campus, including energy reduction strategies and local offset/sequestration opportunities.
Campus Garden
The intern will collaborate with faculty, staff, and student volunteers to manage the campus garden at 1141 Polo Road. The intern will ensure that regular stakeholder meetings are convened to discuss collaboration, develop a process and procedure guide for the garden, support garden leadership development, and coordinate garden volunteer opportunities.

Waste Reduction
The intern will work with the director and the campus waste reduction manger to develop waste reduction campaigns for campus. The work may include waste audits, development of recycling pilots, and/or public presentations on waste reduction and recycling. The intern may also work with stakeholder groups to develop waste reduction competitions and/or events.

Sustainable Event Planning
The intern will work with the director, campus dining services, appropriate facilities staff members, and members of the university administration to develop a sustainable event planning guide for campus.
Campus Green Guide
The intern will distribute the new student guide to sustainable living resources to new students on campus, and will work with Residence Life & Housing staff to orient student staff on how the guide can be used to support behavior change in the residence halls. In the spring, this intern will work with faculty, staff, and students to update the guide and prepare for the publication of a new edition.

Marketing
The intern will implement marketing programs for Zipcar, the campus shuttle, and the re-usable to-go container program and will develop new marketing campaigns, as needed.
Green Team Support
The intern will support the development of a Green Team network for staff and faculty. Work will include drafting best practice documents on energy reduction, waste reduction, and other key initiatives on campus. The intern will support the development of a Web-based communication portal for Green Team participants.
