Save the Date: Sleep, Safety, and Sustainability screening and campus forum

The Office of Sustainability is collaborating with the Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (CEES) on a film screening and campus forum called “Sleep, Safety, and Sustainability.” We will screen the film “A City Dark” on March 27 at 7 p.m. in the Kulynych Auditorium at the Byrum Welcome Center.
“A City Dark”: After moving to NYC from rural Maine, filmmaker Ian Cheney asks a simple question – do we need the stars? Taking him from Brooklyn to Mauna Kea, Paris, and beyond, Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with lights – including increased breast cancer rates from exposure to light at night, and a generation of kids without a glimpse of the universe above. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, “The City Dark” is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars.
A discussion immediately following the screening will address campus concerns over light pollution and the relationship between lighting, safety, and sleep health. The panel will be composed of the following specialists:
- University Police Chief Regina Lawson
- Associate Vice President for Facilities and Campus Services, Jim Alty
- Dr. Vaughn McCall, a sleep science specialist and Wake Forest Baptist Medical School professor
- Paul Bogard, English professor and author of The Geography of Night
