Climate Action Commitments

In 2020, Wake Forest established an ambitious goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. Through consistent investment in building renewal and energy efficiency since 2009, as well as a reduction in the carbon intensity of the electrical power grid, Wake Forest has nearly reached its interim goal of a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030.

The university’s plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 builds on the momentum of these efforts led by partners in Facilities & Campus Services and propels us toward our collective goal.

Wake Forest’s commitment to renewable energy was announced on Earth Day 2024. In partnership with eight other colleges and universities in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, Wake Forest will be bringing a 300k MWh solar array onto the electrical grid in Western Kentucky. The university’s investment in the project is estimated to offset 100% of the campus’ electricity use once the project is online in late 2026.

The 2024 Climate Action Plan Update outlines the university’s three-phased action plan, progress to date, and priorities for the future.

This 2024 Update on the University’s Climate Action Plan spans 15 years of planning, execution, and measurement.
